Understanding the Purpose of Assessments
Types of Assessment Use Cases
You need to ask yourself the reason you're putting an assessment together. Assessments can serve multiple purposes depending on your business needs.
Testing students or clients is one primary use case. You can create tests to evaluate knowledge or understanding of your course material.
Surveys allow you to gather feedback from your audience. This helps you understand their challenges, preferences, and experiences.
Questionnaires can be sent to your list to collect specific information. You might ask about their business, the platforms they use, or the services they provide.
All of these can be achieved with assessments. The key is determining your goal before you start building.
Key Benefits for Online Businesses
Assessments provide several advantages for managing and understanding your audience.
Automatic grading lets you set a passing grade percentage. Students can see their results once they click submit if you enable this feature.
Results control gives you flexibility in how information is displayed. You can choose to:
- Always show assessment results breakdown
- Always hide assessment results breakdown
- Hide results breakdown unless the assessment achieves a passing grade
Automation capabilities streamline your workflow. You can add tags when somebody answers in a certain way or when they complete an assessment.
Email notifications keep you and your team informed. After submission, you can send a completion email with a link to results or send a completion email to your team.
Results tracking provides clear data visibility. You can see everyone in your Kajabi who has completed the questionnaire with a detailed breakdown of their responses.
Flexible question formats accommodate different types of information gathering:
- Multiple choice
- Paragraph
- File upload
- Multiple selection
- Different sections
This variety allows you to collect exactly the information you need from your audience.
Navigating the Kajabi Assessments Dashboard
Accessing Assessment Tools
To access assessments in Kajabi, I go to the contacts section and click on assessments. If I haven't created an assessment before, the system will prompt me to create a new one.
When I start building an assessment, I click to create a new assessment and enter the name. The first decision I need to make is whether I want to automatically grade the assessment or not. If I choose to grade it, I can set a passing grade percentage. Once I've made these selections, I click save.
Overview of Main Assessment Tabs
The assessment dashboard contains three main tabs:
- Details
- Edit Questions
- View Results
Details Tab
In the details tab, I can configure the following settings:

Start text and completion messages |
The default start text reads "Click the button below to start" and the completion message says "You've completed this assessment." I can leave these as default or customize them.
I can also add automations and tags to the assessment. Tags can be applied when someone answers in a certain way or when they complete the assessment. After submission, I have the option to send a completion email with a link to the results or send a completion email to my team.
Edit Questions Tab
This is where I build out the actual assessment questions. The available question types include:
- Multiple choice
- Paragraph
- File upload
- Multiple selection
- Different sections
I can click preview at any time to see how the assessment will appear to users. This opens in a new tab.
View Results Tab
Once people complete the assessment, I can view the results breakdown. This shows everyone in my Kajabi account who has completed the questionnaire and displays their responses.
To delete an assessment, I click on it and select the delete option. I can also grab the URL to share the assessment as a link with anyone.
Creating and Configuring a New Assessment
Initiating an Assessment
To create a new assessment, I navigate to the contacts section and click on assessments. If this is my first assessment, the platform prompts me to create a new one. I click to start building and enter the assessment name in the provided fields.
The first decision I need to make is whether I want automatic grading enabled. I can choose to let people see their answers once they click submit. If I'm creating a test-style assessment, I can enable grading and set a passing grade percentage. For now, I leave automatic grading off and click save.
Once created, I see three main tabs to work with:
- Details
- Edit Questions
- View Results
Setting Grading Preferences
In the details tab, I configure the core settings for my assessment. I can enable or disable automatic grading based on whether I'm testing students or simply gathering information. If I enable grading, I must set a passing grade percentage.
The platform offers several configuration options:
|
Setting |
Purpose |
|
Title and Description |
Names and describes the assessment |
|
Automatic Grading |
Determines if answers are scored automatically |
|
Passing Grade Percentage |
Sets the minimum score required to pass |
|
Language Customization |
Adjusts default text like "Click the button below to start" |
I can customize the completion message that appears after someone finishes. The default text reads "You've completed this assessment," but I can modify this to match my preferred language.
Under automations, I have the option to add tags based on responses or completion. I can tag people who answer in specific ways or tag everyone who completes the assessment.
Selecting Result Display Options
The results breakdown preference controls what participants see after submission. I have three options to choose from:
- Always show assessment results breakdown
- Always hide assessment results breakdown
- Hide results breakdown unless assessment results is achieving a pass grade
I need to consider how I want information presented to individuals filling out the assessment. This choice depends on whether I'm surveying my list, testing students, or sending a questionnaire.
After submission, I can configure email settings. I can send a completion email with a link to the results or send a completion notification to my team. These options help me manage follow-up communication based on the assessment's purpose.
In the view results tab, I can see everyone in my Kajabi who has completed the questionnaire. The breakdown shows all responses in an organized format. I can share the assessment by grabbing the URL and sending it to anyone, whether they're on my list, in my student base, or potential customers I'm surveying.
Customizing Assessment Questions
Question Types and Formats
When you click on "edit questions," you'll find multiple question format options to choose from. The available types include:
- Multiple choice
- Paragraph
- File upload
- Multiple selection
Each format serves different purposes depending on what information you need from your respondents. For example, I use multiple choice when I want respondents to select one option, like "What is your biggest challenge in your online business?" with options for designing your business, growing your audience, generating your sales, or delivering your products.
The paragraph format works well for open-ended questions. I might ask something like "Describe who you help, what you help them achieve, and how you achieve this" where respondents need space to write detailed answers.
Multiple selection allows respondents to choose more than one answer from the list. This is useful for questions like "What platforms do you leverage to show up online?" where someone might select Google, YouTube, and Facebook all at once.
You can add questions by clicking the add question button. To remove a question, click on it and then select delete. At any point while building your assessment, you can click preview to see how it will appear to respondents in a new tab.
Using Sections within Assessments
Sections are available as one of the options when building out your assessment questions. You can use sections to organize your assessment into logical groups or categories.
Sections help break up longer assessments and make them easier for respondents to complete. This organizational tool appears alongside the other question type options when you're adding new elements to your assessment.
Enhancing Assessments with Automation
Applying Tags Based on Responses
You can add automations to your assessments through the details tab. Tags can be applied based on how somebody answers specific questions within your assessment.
When someone completes the assessment, you can also add tags automatically. This allows you to segment your audience based on their completion status or their specific responses.
The tagging system works within the automation section of your assessment settings. You simply need to configure which tags should be applied based on the criteria you set.
Automated Email Notifications
After submission, you have two email notification options available:
- Send a completion email with a link to the results
- Send a completion email to your team
The completion email to participants can include their results, depending on your results breakdown preferences. You can choose to always show assessment results breakdown, always hide assessment results breakdown, or hide results breakdown unless the assessment achieves a passing grade.
These email notifications are configured in the details section of your assessment. The system will automatically send these emails once a participant clicks submit on their completed assessment.
Previewing and Sharing Your Assessment
Previewing the Assessment Experience
You can preview your assessment at any time by clicking the preview button. This opens the assessment in a new tab so you can see exactly what your respondents will experience.
When you preview, you'll see the assessment title and description first, along with a start button. After clicking start, you'll move through each question in sequence, clicking next to advance. Once all questions are completed, you click submit.
After submission, respondents see a completion message. The default text shows "You've completed this assessment," though you can customize this language in the details section.
You can control what results respondents see through the results breakdown preference settings. Your options include:
- Always show assessment results breakdown
- Always hide assessment results breakdown
- Hide results breakdown unless assessment achieves a passing grade
Distributing Assessment Links
You can send the assessment as a link to anyone. Simply grab the URL from the assessment and share it.
The link can be distributed to your email list, your students, or prospective customers you're surveying. Recipients don't need to be existing members in your Kajabi account to access the assessment.
Once people complete the assessment, you can view all responses in the results breakdown section. This shows everyone in your Kajabi who has completed the questionnaire, giving you a comprehensive view of all submissions.
Reviewing and Analyzing Responses
Viewing Results Breakdown
I can access the results breakdown to see everyone who has completed the assessment. After someone submits their responses, they'll see a completion message confirming they've finished.
The results breakdown shows a comprehensive view of all participants in my Kajabi account who have completed the questionnaire. I can grab the URL and share it with anyone I want to survey.
When I look at the results, I'll see data organized in a breakdown format. This allows me to review responses from my list, students, or potential customers.
Results Display Options:
- Always show assessment results breakdown
- Always hide assessment results breakdown
- Hide results breakdown unless assessment results achieve a pass grade
I need to decide which option makes sense based on my assessment's purpose. If I'm surveying my list about their online business challenges, I might choose different settings than if I'm testing students.
Interpreting Assessment Data
The assessment captures specific information based on the questions I've set up. I can see responses to multiple choice questions, paragraph answers, and multiple selection options.
For example, if I ask about the biggest challenge in someone's online business, I'll see whether they selected:
- Designing their business
- Growing their audience
- Generating sales
- Delivering their products
Paragraph responses give me detailed written answers. When I ask someone to describe who they help, what they help them achieve, and how they achieve this, I get complete written explanations from participants.
Multiple selection questions show me all the platforms someone has chosen. If I ask what platforms they leverage to show up online, I can see combinations like Google, YouTube, and Facebook selected together.
I can use this data to understand my audience better or assess student knowledge. The information appears in my Kajabi account where I can review all submissions.
